Let’s Talk Sales! CFS Roundtable on Managing Remote Teams – Episode 67

Throughout the month of July, we've been writing and talking about managing remote teams (especially sales teams!) both on the blog and in the podcast. So in this “CFS Talks Sales” roundtable, we share best practices for managing remote sales teams.

In this episode of Let's Talk Sales, you'll hear from Rebecca SmithCharles BernardArianna Miskel, our new intern Ian Goldsmith, and me, Elizabeth Frederick.

Rebecca recently published an eBook called The Ultimate Guide to Managing a Remote Sales Team. In case you missed it, you can check it out here.

In the podcast, we talked about recent trends in remote work and common challenges people face when managing remote teams. We shared stories about our personal experiences working and managing remotely, as well as examples from others. We also shared best practices and actionable advice for both managers and remote salespeople.

As always, we had some laughs. Rebecca (shockingly!) reminded us to time block, and Charles talked about using candles and meditation to close your day. I talked about why managers should actually encourage their employees to work from home, and Arianna discussed low expectations in Denmark. Ian reminded us of how easily tone can be misperceived in writing, and we talked about how exclamation points and emojis can actually be helpful!

And for the second month in a row we talked about the f.lux plugin. I promise they're not paying us!

Keys to Managing Remote Teams

  1. I recommended that managers schedule regular one-on-one calls with each of their reps.
  2. Rebecca talked about the importance of sharing weekly goals and KPIs.
  3. Charles reminded us of the importance of a beginning-of-day and end-of-day process. You might consider going from “to-do” to “ta-da.”
  4. Arianna discussed how you can use discussion forums (possibly in your Sales PlayBook!) to promote collaboration and foster relationships.
  5. Ian focused on time management and recommended the pomodoro technique.
