If you want to spark growth in your company this year, encourage change!

Now of course, I’m not suggesting changing everything. After all, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

But, if last year sales leveled out, team members failed to meet quota, or worse—it’s time to consider what can be done to spark growth.

Change is an Opportunity to Spark Growth

Embracing change is an opportunity to spark growth.

Let’s correlate this to nature. Trees, plants, and flowers change as the seasons change. For most plants, winter is not a great time. During this season, most of nature almost seems to wither and die. But then what happens in the spring? The seasons change, the temperature rises, fresh rain rolls through, and the sun shines down. It’s now time to flourish and grow.

I’d like for you to consider change for your company, your team, and yourself, in a similar way. There will always be times of discomfort, like winter to a plant. What matters is what happens next.

In business development, there is opportunity for growth when change occurs. In fact, it’s why I chose to write an eBook on just this very topic! I wanted to share ways that all change (even negative change), can be an opportunity.

The “Spark Growth” Exercise:

Ready to spark growth in a powerful way? Here’s an exercise to help you and your team get started.

During your next sales team meeting, have each member of the team take action. On a whiteboard or flip chart, draw a line down the middle. In the left column, write the headline “Personal.” Underneath, write the sub-heading “What changes are happening in my personal life?” Then write a 1, 2, and 3. After the numbers, add a second sub-heading. It should say “What personal goals can be sparked by these changes? Again, write a 1, 2, and 3 after the question.

Next, in the right column, write the headline “Professional.” Underneath, write, “What changes are happening in my professional life?” Then write a 1, 2, and 3. After the numbers, add a second sub-heading. It should say “What goals can be sparked by these changes? Again, write a 1, 2, and 3 after the question.

Last, have your team complete the exercise.

Example:

Here’s an example of the exercise in action.

Personal – What changes are happening in my personal life?

  • I just got a new job, and I now start work at 10am instead of 8:30am.

What personal goals can be sparked by this change?

  • Since I’ll be going in later, I can now workout in the mornings. I am setting a goal to get up and workout each morning before work.

Professional – What changes are happening in my professional life?

  • I am starting a new job

What goals can be sparked by this change?

  • This new job is a great opportunity to meet new people and expand my network. I am setting a goal to meet 10 new contacts each week.
